What is Right ? What is Wrong ? What is Truth ?

Second session of The Truth Project has variety of answers to "What is right ? What is Wrong ?" that includes a boy saying: "Man will either be governed by force OR by the wills of his own heart." & "there can't be two contradicting laws of the universe" & "there has to be some law, otherwise there is anarchy" A representative from one denomination had no guidance about truthfulness for any sacred writing (so pick & choose as desired).

  • What is Right ? What is Wrong ?
  • What is Truth ?
  • Can God lie or change character ?
  • Can survey(s) define Truth ?

Are you peddling this product or extracting from it pieces for discussion? If you have the materials, wouldn't it put us at a disadvantage in discussing the points, especially, since you made reference to the "Second session of The Truth Project"? CM

  • Question "What is truth ?" was asked by Pilate in John 18:38

Questions can be discussed without Dr Del Tackett's materials. Other questions relate to Pilate's "What is Truth ?" question:

    • What is Right ? What is Wrong ?
    • Can God lie or change character ?
    • Can survey(s) define Truth ?

My hypothesis is answering "What is Right ? What is Wrong ?", ... reflects personal answer of "What is Truth ?" (belief & faith).

FYI: peddling this product = no (since am not associated with Focus on the Family). Thankful for many thought provoking questions and historical insights in The Truth Project lessons (so watching them again to learn more).

“Truth is held to be a property of propositions such that a proposition is true if and only if the state of affairs to which it refers obtains; otherwise it is false.”

  • After reading property of propositions, wondered if Truth is absolute (e.g. One God) or relative (e.g. "which it obtains") ?

When I consider, "what is truth"?

This question has tentacles in many areas of life: Ethical, moral, educational, and even political consequences, reaching the farthest corners of our everyday lives. e.g.

    • How do we view God?
    • How do we view ourselves?
    • How do we view the Bible?
    • How do we view Jesus Christ?
    • How can we know God?
    • And how should we then live?
    • Is it possible to know the truth?
    • And how does man obtain knowledge?
    • Is there absolute truth, or is everything relative?
    • Is truth biographical, that is, shaped by the personal life history of the individual, “filtered through the prism of our individual experience”?
    • Is pluralism the acceptable trend of our time, and we better get used to it?
    • Have we as a Church simply come too far in history to expect the same unified stand that our pioneers had on certain theological issues?

To cut through the chase, let's start with the Bible:

“If you abide in My Word, you are My disciples indeed. And you shall know the truth, and the truth shall make you free, (John 8:31, NKJV).

God's Word is the source of all true theology. It is the beginning place for our knowledge of God and of His truth. And all truth is determined by God not by His created subjects.

"...truth is not truth to those who do not practice it. Truth is only truth to you when you live it in the daily life, showing the world what those people must be who are at last saved. . . ."

The OT words for "truth" emphasize the notions of reliability, firmness, sureness, stability, and continuance, which are ontologically grounded in the nature of God (Exod 34:6; Ps 31:5).

Building on the OT, the NT word for "truth" underlines the non-concealment of God's being in the history of humanity. According to the Theological Dictionary of the New Testament, "Etymologically "aletheia" means "non-concealment." It thus denotes what is seen, indicated, expressed, or disclosed, i.e., a thing as it really is, not as it is concealed or falsified". In Scripture, then, truth stands on the ontological basis of God's revealing his very being by:

    • Presence (John 1:14; 1John 5:6)
    • Action (John 1:17)
    • Words (John 17:17; Ps 119:43, 151, 160; Dan 10:21)
    • Teachings (Ps 119:142) in the flow of human history

God's historical revelation reached its highest manifestation in Christ, who, as God himself, is the truth (John 14:6), and who reveals truth by his ontological and epistemological presence and action and by epistemologically putting the truth in words and teachings (Mark 12:1). For a report on the various meanings of the biblical words for "truth" can be found in the source below.

Thus absolute truth stands on the belief that our knowledge springs from timeless, changeless realities. I hope this helps in understanding what is truth? CM
